Ane Brun - True Colors
A wonderful cover, of a bloody amazing song. Many people believe Billy Steinberg wrote True Colors originally as a tribute to his mother. However it was co-written with Tom Kelly, and the lyric which actually was about his mother, has been dropped in the now famous recordings;
“You’ve got a long list with so many choices, a ventriloquist with so many voices, and your friends in high places say where the pieces fit, you’ve got too many faces in your makeup kit, but I see your true colors shining through,”
Billy revealed later on that once they stood back from the song and read the main lyric, they realised it had become more than one persons tribute to another. It was anyone’s tribute to anyone.
“It could be a parent to a child, a friend to a friend, could be for or about anyone.”
Ane covers this song in a very light airy style, with minimal backing and low volume. The way the vocal dominates the sound means you have to listen… and rightly so.

Famous Version Lyrics
You with the sad eyes
don’t be discouraged
oh I realize
it’s hard to take courage
in a world full of people
you can lose sight of it all
and the darkness inside you
can make you fell so small
But I see your true colors
shining through
I see your true colors
and that’s why I love you
so don’t be afraid to let them show
your true colors
true colors are beautiful
like a rainbow
Show me a smile then
don’t be unhappy, can’t remember
when I last saw you laughing
if this world makes you crazy
and you’ve taken all you can bear
you call me up
because you know I’ll be there
And I’ll see your true colors
shining through
I see your true colors
and that’s why I love you
so don’t be afraid to let them show
your true colors
true colors are beautiful
like a rainbow
