Paul “Hessy” Hester Tribute
Everyone on the planet knows a Crowded House song. Period.
Paul Hester was the little known drummer in Crowded House, having teamed up with much more widely admired Finn Brothers in the late 80’s and early 90’s. To the extent that if you visit the bands discography on Wikipedia, Hessy doesn’t get a mention until the final sentence. Hester however was with The Crowdies for a great portion of their finest songs–”Distant Sun”, “It’s Only Natural”, and “Into Temptation” to name but a few.
Hester left Crowded House in 1996, seeking more time at home with his family and young children. It would be his dedication to this family, and the eventual loss of them to divorce, that would lead to his suicide in 2005.
Musical history is steeped in tributes to fallen band members, and lost loved ones. Crowded House were to be no exception, as at the 2005 Aria Awards Neil Finn would perform a solo tribute to his fallen friend. In a style only a Crowded House song can, tribute was given. Brilliantly.
“That’s why I tell you, you better be home soon”
